Macon's Historic Douglass Theatre Names Toni Simmons Henson as Artistic Director for Inaugural Series Celebrating the Spirit of American Theatre
PrZen/33587390
MACON, Ga. - PrZen -- Macon, Georgia — Dr. Shelton Land, executive director of the historic Douglass Theatre, has announced the appointment of Toni Simmons Henson as artistic director in residence of the theatre's inaugural Signature Playwright Series. Henson is tasked with launching a historic new season of plays that explore themes of resilience, cultural legacy, and triumph in the American narrative.
Set to premiere in September 2025, this landmark series aims to highlight the diverse stories that have shaped the nation as we approach its 250th anniversary of independence. Henson, a distinguished leader in theatre and arts administration, brings over 20 years of experience in production, cultural storytelling, and arts development.
Her career began as an award-winning franchise owner of Drama Kids International, a children's acting academy dedicated to nurturing creativity and confidence in young performers. She is also the founder of the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival, launched in 2012, which has overseen the production and readings of more than 500 plays, amplifying Black voices and stories.
"Being part of this historic series launch is a true honor," said Henson. "It's a privilege to share impactful, inspiring theatre that fosters dialogue and celebrates our collective history for generations to come."
The series also pays tribute to the rich legacy of the Douglass Theatre in Macon, established in 1921 by Charles H. Douglas, as the second-longest running Black-led theatre in the United States. Dr. Land emphasizes the venue's cultural significance.
"The Douglass Theatre has long been a symbol of resilience and community for Black artists and audiences," said Dr. Land. "My vision is to continue its legacy by fostering bold, impactful storytelling that reflects the American experience. We're excited to partner on this landmark series, which will continue to honor our history and inspire future generations."
The 2025 season will open with a production of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun directed by Chris Scott. This production commemorates the 85th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that struck down laws previously preventing Black Americans from purchasing homes in white neighborhoods. This iconic play remains a powerful exploration of equality and the pursuit of hope.
Following this, the series will present "Daughter of the King" by Charlotte-based playwright S. Kristi Douglas during the Christmas and Holiday season—a heartfelt story that celebrates faith, family, and cultural heritage. The season will conclude in March with the award-winning tour de force play, The Fannie Lou Hamer Story by AUDELCO award-winning actor, Mzuri Moyo Aimbaye, in honor of Women's History Month. The play highlights the resilience and contributions of women throughout history.
Season tickets are on sale now. To learn more about the series, visit douglasstheatre.org or call 478-742-2000.
