On average, at least one child dies from choking on food every five days in the United States. This translates to approximately 73 deaths per year from food-related choking alone.

• Age Vulnerability: Children under 5 years old are at the highest risk, accounting for about 75% of choking-related fatalities among those aged 0-19. • Food vs. Non-Food Items: Between 66 and 77 children under 10 die each year in the U.S. from choking on food. Additionally, in 2017, 184 children and adolescents died from choking on non-food objects, such as toys, coins, or balloons. Hot dogs are identified as the leading food-related choking hazard for children under 3.
