AUA Partners with UK's Pier Health Group to Add More Clinical Slots for UK Students
PrZen/33451828
NEW YORK - PrZen -- American University of Antigua College of Medicine (AUA) is proud to announce its clinical affiliation with Pier Health Group, Weston-super-Mare, United Kingdom. Per this agreement, UK nationals attending medical school at AUA can complete a portion of their clinical education at teaching sites within the Pier Health Group partner network.
AUA's Doctor of Medicine program starts at the university's high-tech campus in Antigua, West Indies, where students learn the fundamentals of preclinical science via a highly individualized, interactive curriculum that leverages small-group learning, emphasizes frequent faculty-student interaction, and employs advanced technology, such as simulation labs. Students then complete the remaining two years of their medical education—the clinical sciences portion—at teaching hospitals affiliated with AUA in both the United Kingdom and the US.
"The collaboration between AUA and Pier Health Group will provide students from the UK with excellent clinical experience," said Peter Bell, MD, Provost and Vice President of Global Medical Education at AUA. "It is also noteworthy that graduates of AUA's International Track who practice in the UK will help to alleviate the physician shortage in the UK."
Established in 2019, Pier Health Group is a partnership of surgeries that strives to provide high-quality healthcare to more than 100,000 patients in and around the Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset areas.
"We are extremely excited to forge this affiliation with AUA," said Brandie Deignan, Chief Executive Officer, Pier Health Group. "Primary care is the front door of our health service and Pier Health Group has, since its birth, been at the cutting edge of modern medicine. We are excited to align with the educators at AUA, who are also at the cutting edge of medical education."
Based on a review of AUA's curriculum by UK's General Medical Council (GMC), any doctor awarded a primary medical qualification from AUA will be able to apply to sit for the PLAB and for GMC registration without having their qualification individually assessed.
In addition to Pier Health Group, AUA also has clinical affiliations in the United Kingdom with Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, Lakeside Healthcare Group, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire.
